Icing Procedure

Icing occurs when the puck is shot by a player from behind his own center red line and crosses the opponent’s goal line while at the same numerical strength, and without touching any other player.

Back Linesman

  • Raise back arm up in the air to indicate a potential icing. Use verbal communication as well
  • Skate towards his partners blue line to cover than line in the event the icing is waved off
  • Once the whistle is blown the back linesmen will point to the face off spot, skate to that spot while watching the players and await the puck from his partner.

Front Linesman

  • Once you notice the potential icing, he will follow the play in deep to ensure the puck crosses the goal line
  • Before the whistle is blown, he shall check back one more time to ensure that the icing signal is still on and to ensure it has not been waved off.
  • Once you have confirmed it is still icing the front linesman will blow his whistle and raise the non-whistle hand.
  • If it is not an icing use verbal communications and wave off the icing.
  • If at all possible determine the call by the time you get to the hash marks
  •  If the goalie plays the puck prior to it crossing the goal line the icing shall be waved off
  • If a defending player deliberately turns away form the icing or in your judgement you feel he could have played it the icing shall be waved off
Once the whistle has been blown, pick up the puck if no gatherings have occurred after the whistle and take it down to your partners face off spot. Ensure you watch the play after the whistle has blown to ensure no altercations take place.
