Officals Intro

Welcome to the Weyburn Hockey Officials web page. I would also like to welcome all new officials for the 2008/09 hockey season and welcome back all returning officials. Hopefully this year will be as enjoyable and educational as last year. My name is Lindsey Leko and I am the Referee in Chief for the Weyburn Minor Hockey Association. Enclosed with the Officials section of the WMHA webpage you will find a variety of officiating information and links to various officiating websites. This year the officials clinic will be held in Weyburn on the 21st of September at the Weyburn Comp Highschool starting at 0900 hours and going until 1pm. The CHA on line part of the clinic must be done prior to attending the clinic and this can be completed as last year at the SHA website. http://referees.sha.sk.ca/. If you are new to Weyburn or have some hockey officiating experience please let me know as we sure could use some new officials in Weyburn. This is especially true with the SR levels of hockey

Fees to officiate in Saskatchewan are as follows:

Clinic Registration Fee $ 30.00
(Clinic Fee must be paid at clinic)

Membership/Participation Fees

Inactive $20.00
Junior - 17 & Under $55.00
Senior - 18 & Older $100.00
Level IV $120.00
Level V $130.00
Level VI $150.00

If you are a registered SHA sanctioned hockey player, coach or trainer deduct $36.

As last year, some of the key areas that will be looked at include obstruction fouls constituting the " New Standard of play" as well as Checking to the head and Checking from behind penalties. The Weyburn Hockey Officials Code of Conduct is still in place and I expect that all of you will follow it. Much of it is common sense and is fair and sportsmanlike in nature. I am happy to announce that Scott Edwards will be assigning all Bantam and Midget levels for both boys and girls. I will take on assigning and mentoring Atom, and PeeWee.Scott and I will do our best to assign fairly, and give every official the opportunity to expand their officiating skills and provide them an opportunity to do better hockey. We will not assign someone levels of hockey when we feel that they are not ready for it. This is not fair to you as an official, your colleagues and the teams. Assignments will be handed out every two weeks again and will be posted on the WMHA website. . Once you have accepted a reffing assignment it is your responsibility to be there.
If you cannot do the game you must find someone who is capable of doing that level of hockey to do it for you. The Referee in Chief will not find someone to do your game for you unless it is a family emergency. If a game is missed, the absent official will be fined that game fee which is payable to the Referee in Chief prior to any additional games being assigned. A second offence will result in a penalty of two times the game fee and the third offence will carry a suspension until reviewed by the WMHA executive.
Officials MUST be at the rink at least 15 minutes before puck drop. No exceptions to this rule.

The last issue I want to address is the ZERO TOLLERANCE FACILITY. WMHA strictly enforces it and we will work hard to mentor the young officials in the Atom and PeeWee levels of hockey so that they do not have to deal with it. .
If you have any questions, or comments, or even things you want to see added to the site, please do not hesitate to call and we can make it work. If you are a junior officials please do not hesitate to give a senior official a call if you are having problems at a game or if you need help with game reports. We are here to help whenever you need it! Remember to do your best at every game and do not worry about making mistakes or missing a call. Every time you miss a call you learn something and that is all a part of being a referee. Players make mistakes as well and if they did not, all games would be tied at zero and there would be no need for officials. Work hard and have a great season. I wish you all the success this up coming year.

Remember: "Our team makes the playoffs every year"!
