Intent: to communicate to players and coaches and fans that a
penalty has been called.
PROCEDURES:
Delayed penalty
- Referee raises arm straight up in the air
- Once offending team has gained control of the puck the referee will blow his whistle and come to a complete stop
- Referee will pause, lower the arm up in the air so that it is pointing at the offending player.
- Referee will then communicate player’s number, color and the penalty.
- Referee will then make the appropriate penalty signal
- Referee will skate backwards to the penalty bench keeping all the players in view
- Stop at the penalty bench and communicate to the staff inside the box the players number, color, and penalty all while giving the appropriate signal
HINTS
- Don’t point at the player if the player is very close
- Never point
- Ensure you come to a complete stop before pointing out the player and signal
- Avoid confrontations with players
- If a misconduct is to be issued as a result of verbal abuse, do not make the signal until the player is in the box
- Do not showboat while making the signal
